Tungsten carbide roller ring was born with the development of metal processing industry after powder metallurgy technology came out in 1909. Since Germany introduced the tungsten carbide wire drawing die in 1918, the research of tungsten carbide in various countries has been stimulated, and rolls of various purposes have appeared one after another. However, the extensive application of tungsten carbide roll was after 1960. The birth of the first high-speed non-twisting wire mill of Morgen company in 1964 raised the finishing rolling speed of wire by four times at that time. Because the finishing mill group works under high speed and high stress, the wear resistance of cast iron roll and tool steel roll is poor, the life of the rolling trough is short, and the repair and loading of the roll are very frequent, which affects the efficiency of the rolling mill, it is no longer suitable for the requirements of finishing rolling production, so it is replaced by the combined tungsten carbide roll. There are more than two hundred sets of Morgan Mill in the world, which consume hundreds of tons of tungsten carbide Rolls annually.

The tungsten cemented carbide rollers have high hardness, and its hardness changes very little with temperature changes. The hardness at 700 °C is 4 times that of high-speed steel; and the elastic modulus, compressive strength, flexural strength, and thermal conductivity are also over 1 time higher than tool steel.

Since the thermal conductivity of the tungsten cemented carbide roll is high, the heat dissipation effect is good, and the time at which the surface of the roll is at a high temperature is short so that the high-temperature reaction time between the roll and the harmful impurities in the cooling water is short. Therefore, the tungsten cemented carbide roll is more resistant to corrosion and cold and hot fatigue than the tool steel roll.
Tungsten Carbide rollers are widely used in metal forming, especially in hot rolling industry mainly for intermediate and last finishing stands to ensuring superior surface finish and dimensional stability of processed metal products. Rolls are also commonly used for wire flattening, de-scaling and straightening applications.
